Yangzab Chenrezig

The Essential Practice of

Loving-Kindness and Compassion

There is no more important practice than the cultivation of loving-kindness and compassion toward all sentient beings. In this world of suffering, where pain and confusion seem to grow day by day, the most direct way to bring relief is through the practice of Chenrezig (Avalokitesvara), the embodiment of universal compassion.

Within the Yangzab cycle of treasure teachings, one of the most profound and essential revelations is the Outer, Inner, and Secret practice of Chenrezig. This cycle provides methods that can be practiced on multiple levels.

In its essential form, the practice is not difficult to accomplish, and its blessings can be experienced swiftly. Through consistent engagement, practitioners soon discover the transformative power of Chenrezig's compassion in their own hearts and in the world around them.

Moreover, once one has gained accomplishment in this practice, there are advanced methods within the Yangzab Chenrezig cycle specifically designed to benefit beings who have passed away and are journeying through the bardo, the intermediate state between this life and the next rebirth.

Thus, the Outer, Inner, and Secret Yangzab Chenrezig practices are not only a direct path to awakening compassion within oneself, but also a means to bring limitless benefit to others-both the living and the deceased-guiding all toward liberation and peace.

Chöd: The Practice of Fearless Compassion

Chöd is a transformative Tibetan Buddhist practice that cuts through obstacles, negativity, and self-delusion, awakening our innate brilliance and wisdom. Rooted in the feminine energy of Machig Labdrön, it combines sacred song, ritual instruments, meditation, and visualization into a single, powerful path.

This practice cultivates fearlessness, clarity, and compassion while offeri ng healing to both individuals and the environment. Chöd is theultimate act of generosity, releasing suffering and opening the heart to boundless wisdom.

Biography of Venerable Khenpo Tenzin Nyima

Khenpo Tenzin Nyima (b. 1973) is a highly respected teacher of the Drikung Kagyu lineage and an important lineage holder of the Yangzab Dzogchen Treasure Cycle. He is recognized as a heart son and Dharma heir of his root teacher, Ven. Lamchen Gyalpo Rinpoche.

Early Life

Born into a nomadic family, Khenpo Tenzin Nyima spent his childhood as a shepherd. At the age of fourteen, he met Lamchen Gyalpo Rinpoche, took refuge with him, and soon afterward accompanied him to India to begin formal Buddhist study and training.

Education and Training

At fifteen, he entered the Drikung Kagyu Jangchub Ling Institute in Dehra Dun, India, where he studied Buddhist philosophy for nine years.

In 1992, he was selected to present before H.H. the Dalai Lama at the inauguration of Jangchub Ling.

That same year, he received international recognition in an academic competition hosted by the Tibet Foundation in London.

In 1998, upon completing his studies, he was awarded the title of Khenpo (Doctor of Philosophy) by H.H. Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche. He then pursued advanced studies at Shechen Monastery in Nepal with Khenchen Petse Rinpoche, receiving the complete cycle of Secret Essence (Guhyagarbha Tantra) empowerments and teachings.

Teaching and Preservation Work

After immigrating to the United States, Khenpo Tenzin Nyima took residence at the Gampopa Vajrayana Buddhist Center, founded by his root teacher Lamchen Gyalpo Rinpoche.

He has received the full transmissions of the Drikung Kagyu lineage and the complete Yangzab Dzogchen cycle, which he now transmits to students worldwide.

He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Rare Dharma Preservation Project, an initiative dedicated to safeguarding rare and precious Buddhist teachings and practices.

Known for his humility, warmth, and depth of Dharma understanding, Khenpo Tenzin Nyima teaches internationally, guiding students in study and practice, emphasizing the cultivation of compassion and wisdom for the benefit of all beings

Yangzab Dzogchen Treasure Teachings

The Yangzab Dzogchen Treasure Teachings are unique to the Drikung Kagyu lineage. Revealed by Drikung Terton Rinchen Phuntsok as an earth treasure, this extensive array of practices contains great blessings and is very powerful in these degenerate times. Yangzab is extremely profound and swift in achieving the final goal of full realization, or Buddhahood.

Padmasambhava foresaw a time when dharma teachings would degenerate due to the increasing power of ignorance and afflictive emotions in the minds of sentient beings. He prophesied that the Yangzab teachings, which he received through Kuntuzangpo (Dharmakaya), the 100 peaceful and wrathful deities (representing the 100 Shitro deities), the five buddha families (Sambhogakaya), and Garab Dorje (Nirmanakaya), would be most effective in future times of spiritual darkness.

Origins in Tibet

In the 8th century, King Trisong Deutsen of Tibet, an emanation of Manjushri, invited Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) to Tibet to subdue forces hostile to the Dharma. After founding Samye Monastery, the king passed away, and his son, Prince Mutik Tsenpo (Sena Lek), became king.

Guru Rinpoche conferred upon him the Yangzab empowerments and instructions. Recognizing that the prince's royal duties left little time for extended practice, Guru Rinpoche instructed him to commit the practice to written form. Six copies were prepared on sheets of gold, turquoise, copper, and other precious materials. These were wrapped and concealed by Yeshe Tsogyal in the sacred cave Khandro Tsok Khang Kiri Yang Zong Namkha Phug at Zhoto Terdrom.

The terma remained hidden until the 16th century, when it was revealed by Rinchen Phuntsog, himself an emanation of King Mutik Tsenpo. Since then, the Yangzab Dzogchen cycle has been transmitted uninterruptedly within the Drikung lineage, preserved and practiced to this day.
